A porch swing or bed swing is one of those projects where utility and appearance both have to be taken into account. You want your rope to be strong and durable for a long lasting rope swing, but you also want the rope to complement the appearance of the swing.

A beautiful bed swing hanging from an unsightly rope just does not have the same look as one suspended from a big, substantial rope that feels like it belongs on a dock, old sailing ship, or coastal porch.

So, what is the best rope for a porch swing or bed swing?

For most outdoor swings, we recommend choosing between Promanila Rope, 8-Strand Promanila Rope, Twisted Polyester Rope, and 8-Strand Polyester Rope. All four give you the strength needed for a properly designed swing installation, but they offer slightly different looks, weather resistance, and long-term durability.

If you want the short answer, Promanila is our most popular choice for a classic natural rope look, while blonde Twisted Polyester is our top recommendation when the swing will spend most of its life in full sun or high humidity. If you want the rope itself to become one of the showpieces of the swing, take a serious look at the 8-strand versions. The braid has a bigger, more decorative appearance that looks fantastic on a hanging bed or high-end porch swing.

Let's break down the differences.

What Should You Look for in Rope for a Porch Swing?

The most obvious thing people look for is Strength. And while strength is important, most people have the common sense to know you can’t hang a porch swing on strings.

A good outdoor porch swing rope also needs to deal with sunlight, humidity, rain, temperature changes, abrasion, and repeated movement. It should not become rough and unpleasant to touch after a season outdoors. If you are building a bed swing specifically for the look, the rope also needs enough visual weight to match the size of the swing.

This is why we usually steer people away from natural-fiber rope for permanent outdoor swings.

Natural Manila rope certainly has the traditional appearance people associate with an old-fashioned rope swing. The problem is that natural fibers absorb moisture. Over time, they can shrink, swell, shed fibers, mildew, rot, and become rough. Modern synthetic ropes can give you essentially the same design with a much longer lifespan.

For a porch swing or bed swing, that usually means either Promanila for the natural look or Polyester for maximum outdoor life.

A 1 inch diameter rope is the most common for porch swings, though you can always go bigger if you want a more substantial look. The 8-strand variations of our Promanila and Polyester ropes tend to be slightly larger than listed diameter in practice, due to the braiding. The image below is a 2-inch 8-Strand Promanila.

Finally, we recommend an eye splice at the top end of the rope for easy hanging (we can add the eye splices for you), while the other end of the rope is better left unspliced so that you have the freedom to adjust length when hanging your bed swing. Leave a couple extra feet beyond your intended hanging length - about 12 inches per inch of rope diameter.

Promanila Rope: Our Most Popular Rope for the Classic Bed Swing Look

If you picture a big wooden bed swing hanging from thick tan rope, Promanila is probably the rope you have in mind. Promanila, which is also called Unmanila or synthetic Manila, is designed to recreate the traditional look of natural Manila rope using synthetic fibers.

Our Promanila is not simply inexpensive tan polypropylene. It is a higher-quality Danline construction rope with additional UV protection and resistance to moisture and chemicals. For a porch swing, that gives it several advantages.

It has the warm tan color and classic nautical appearance people want, but it is smoother than natural Manila. It does not splinter like natural fiber rope can. It does not absorb water the same way, and it resists rot, mold, mildew, shrinking, shedding, and hardening.

That makes Promanila a particularly good choice for a covered porch, partially shaded deck, pergola, lake house porch, or other location where the rope will be outdoors but not getting hammered by direct sunlight from morning until evening every day of the year.

It is also extremely strong. Our 1 inch Promanila Rope has a breaking strength of 14,388 pounds, while the 2-inch version has a breaking strength of 50,357 pounds.

That is far beyond the loads you would expect from a normal residential bed swing. In most properly built swing installations, the limiting factor is likely to be the mounting structure or hardware long before it is the rope itself.

That does not mean you should ignore the rope's safe working load, knots, splices, attachment points, or mounting structure. A swing is a complete system. Every part of that system needs to be appropriate for supporting people.

But from a rope-strength standpoint, large-diameter Promanila gives you plenty to work with.

When Should You Choose Twisted Polyester Rope Instead?

If your bed swing is going to live in full sun, especially somewhere with intense UV exposure or high humidity, we recommend stepping up to Twisted Polyester Rope. Polyester is one of the best outdoor rope fibers available.

It has excellent resistance to sunlight, abrasion, moisture, mold, mildew, petroleum products, and many chemicals. It also has relatively low stretch, which helps keep a swing hanging consistently instead of gradually feeling like the suspension lines are changing length.

For the classic swing look, our blonde Twisted Polyester Rope is the one to look at (although black can look nice too if that’s your style).

We specifically offer the blonde color for people who want something closer to the traditional tan appearance of Promanila but need the extra outdoor durability of polyester.

The blonde polyester is slightly lighter and cleaner-looking than Promanila. It does not perfectly imitate a natural fiber rope, but on a well-built porch swing it still gives you that heavy, nautical rope appearance.

If your priorities are long outdoor life, UV resistance, low maintenance, and strength, this may be the best rope for an outdoor bed swing. It is also remarkably strong.

Our 1-inch Twisted Polyester Rope has a breaking strength of 19,800 pounds. The 1-1/4-inch version is rated at 32,800 pounds, 1-1/2 inch at 46,400 pounds, and the 2-inch rope reaches 80,600 pounds.

Again, those numbers should not be interpreted as permission to hang tens of thousands of pounds from your porch. They simply demonstrate how much strength is available in the rope itself.

Your swing frame, ceiling structure, brackets, fasteners, splices, and other hardware all need to be considered separately.

8-Strand Promanila: When the Rope Is Part of the Design

Now we get into one of our favorite options for a bed swing.

8-Strand Promanila Rope has many of the same basic advantages as standard Promanila, but visually it is a completely different experience. As you would expect from the title, 8-Strand Promanila is a braided rope of 8 strands, increasing the visual complexity of the rope quite a bit from the typical 3-strand variety.

Eight-strand rope tends to look larger and more substantial than a conventional twisted rope of the same nominal diameter because of its construction. (In some cases it actually is a little larger diameter, because of settling in the braid) That gives a bed swing a high-end, custom-built appearance.

If you are spending the time and money to build a large daybed swing with nice woodwork, cushions, and hardware, an 8-strand rope can be the finishing detail that makes the entire thing look intentional.

Our 8-Strand Promanila keeps the traditional tan, natural-rope appearance while using synthetic fibers that resist the problems associated with real Manila. It feels smooth, resists mildew and rot, does not shed like natural fiber, and can be used indoors or outdoors.

The rope is available in large diameters that work especially well visually on a bed swing. The 1-inch rope has a breaking strength of 20,000 pounds, 1-1/4 inch is 32,000 pounds, 1-1/2 inch reaches 46,420 pounds, and 2-inch 8-Strand Promanila has a breaking strength of 77,770 pounds.

If you’re looking to make the rope on your rope swing really stand-out, 8-Strand Promanila is a fantastic choice.

8-Strand Polyester: The Premium Outdoor Swing Rope

If 8-Strand Promanila is the premium version of the natural look, 8-Strand Polyester Rope is the premium option when long-term outdoor durability is the priority. This rope combines the dramatic 8-strand appearance with 100% polyester construction.

That means excellent UV resistance, excellent abrasion resistance, very good resistance to moisture, mold, mildew, petroleum products, and most chemicals, plus a soft feel that works particularly well when the rope is going to be visible and touched.

It is available in blonde, black, and white.

For a traditional porch or coastal bed swing, blonde is probably going to be the first color most people look at. Black can create a much more modern architectural look, especially against lighter wood or white siding. White also works beautifully in coastal and nautical designs.

Like the Promanila version, the 8-strand construction can run larger than its nominal diameter because of the shape of the braid. That means a 1-1/2-inch 8-strand rope can have more visual presence than you might expect from reading the measurement alone. And the strength is substantial.

The 1-inch version has a breaking strength of 19,800 pounds. At 1-1/4 inches it is 32,800 pounds, at 1-1/2 inches it is 46,400 pounds, and the 2-inch rope has a breaking strength of 80,600 pounds.

If someone asks us for the best-looking premium rope for an outdoor bed swing that will be exposed to a lot of sun, 8-Strand Polyester is difficult to beat.

What Diameter Rope Should You Use for a Bed Swing?

While 1-inch rope is a common choice, and it’s plenty strong for most applications, we prefer a slightly more substantial rope. A full-size hanging daybed is a big piece of furniture. A thin rope can look out of proportion even when it is technically strong enough.

For large porch bed swings, we generally like the look of 1-1/2-inch or 2-inch decorative rope.

If the ropes are a major visible part of the design, 2 inches gives you that big, heavy nautical appearance people usually picture when they search for bed swing rope. The 8-strand constructions can appear even more substantial because of their braided shape.

Smaller porch swings can use smaller rope, but do not make your choice based solely on minimum breaking strength. Think about the overall proportions of the swing, how the rope will feel in your hand, how it will fit your hardware, and the finished look you are trying to create.

For a decorative bed swing, rope diameter is partly an engineering decision and partly a design decision.

Promanila or Polyester: Which Lasts Longer Outdoors?

If pure outdoor longevity is the question, polyester wins. That is particularly true when the swing gets a lot of direct sunlight.

Our Promanila has significantly better UV performance than cheap tan polypropylene rope because of its construction and added UV protection. It is an excellent outdoor decorative rope and remains our most popular choice when someone wants that traditional Manila look without natural Manila's maintenance problems.

But sunlight eventually takes a toll on polypropylene-based fibers. Polyester handles prolonged UV exposure better.

That is why we generally recommend Promanila for the best traditional appearance in moderate exposure and blonde polyester for maximum life in full-sun environments.

If the swing is sitting under a covered porch in Michigan, Promanila may be exactly what you want. If it is hanging outdoors in a sunny Florida backyard, polyester is probably a better choice.

Should You Use 3-Strand or 8-Strand Rope for a Porch Swing?

Both work. This decision is mostly about appearance and budget. Traditional twisted Promanila gives you the most recognizable old-fashioned rope look. Twisted blonde polyester gives you a similar basic style with better long-term UV resistance.

Move into 8-strand construction and the rope becomes more visually distinctive. The weave is more complex, the rope has more presence, and it can make a fairly simple swing look much more expensive.

If your swing is a functional piece of patio furniture and you want a clean traditional appearance, twisted rope is an excellent choice. If the swing is a centerpiece of the porch, the 8-strand rope deserves a look.

Make the Installation Easier With a Bed Swing Hanging Kit

The rope is only one part of the installation. We also offer a Bed Swing Hanging Kit specifically designed to work with these large decorative ropes.

Each kit includes a heavy-duty stainless steel swing bracket, stainless steel S-hook, and two mounting screws. The bracket and S-hook together measure approximately 7-1/4 inches, and the S-hook will accommodate rope up to 2 inches in diameter. The hardware has a published 500-pound safe working load limit per kit.

The eye bolt in the bracket is also designed to swing back and forth, allowing the hardware to move with the swing instead of forcing everything to remain completely rigid. For a clean installation, we particularly like pairing the kit with rope that has a custom eye splice.

When ordering the rope, a 2 to 4-inch eye splice instead of a larger standard eye gives you a compact loop that looks especially clean with the S-hook. A thimble splice is not necessary for this particular setup because the rope is interacting with smooth swing hardware rather than the type of high-wear industrial attachment where a thimble becomes more important.

The Bed Swing Hanging Kit was designed specifically around this type of project, including installations using our 2-inch rope.

Just remember that the hardware rating, rope rating, fasteners, and structure above the swing are separate parts of the system. Make sure whatever you mount the brackets into is structurally appropriate for the finished swing and its occupants.

So, What Is the Best Rope for a Porch Swing?

If you want the best classic natural-rope appearance, choose Promanila.

If you want that natural look but something more unusual and visually impressive, choose 8-Strand Promanila.

If your swing gets heavy sun or lives in a hot, humid climate and longevity is your biggest concern, choose Blonde Twisted Polyester Rope.

If you want the most premium combination of outdoor durability and visual impact, choose 8-Strand Polyester Rope.

There really is not a bad choice among those four. The difference comes down to where the swing will live and what you want it to look like.

What Is the Best Rope for a Bed Swing in Full Sun?

Go with polyester. Blonde Twisted Polyester gives you the closest thing to the traditional tan rope appearance while providing better UV resistance than Promanila.

For an even more decorative appearance, blonde 8-Strand Polyester gives you those same basic polyester advantages with a larger, more distinctive braid.

What Is the Best Rope for a Covered Porch Swing?

For a covered porch, Promanila is hard to beat.

You get the traditional rope appearance, smooth texture, moisture resistance, good outdoor durability, and a price that generally makes it more economical than 100% polyester.

If the rope is not sitting in intense direct sunlight all day, Promanila gives you an excellent balance of appearance, performance, and value.

Where Can I Buy Rope for a Porch Swing or Bed Swing?

That part is easy. At RightRope.com, we stock Promanila, 8-Strand Promanila, Twisted Polyester, and 8-Strand Polyester in the large diameters that look right on porch swings and hanging beds.

You can order custom lengths instead of buying a giant coil you do not need. On all of these ropes, we can also add professionally finished eye splices so the rope arrives ready for a clean installation.

Add our stainless steel Bed Swing Hanging Kits and you can put together the rope and hardware for the entire hanging system in one place.

If you are still trying to decide between Promanila and polyester, twisted and 8-strand, or 1-1/2-inch and 2-inch rope, give us a call. We work with rope every day.

Tell us where the swing is going, how much sun it gets, what the swing looks like, and how you plan to hang it, and we can help you choose the rope that is going to look right and hold up for the long haul.
