Double Braid Nylon Rope
If you need a longer, non-standard eye-length (or dock line length), you may build your own dock lines using this same rope on our Double Braid Nylon Rope page.
Our premium double braided dock lines are made in the USA. Our dock lines are unique because they have a polyester cover with a nylon core. The polyester has greater UV and abrasion resistance and the nylon core gives the rope high strength and elasticity. The ability to stretch protects your boat and hardware from damage. These ropes are made by expert rope makers using modern braiding equipment and meets or exceeds the standards set by the Cordage Institute specifications for high-performance ropes. Each dock line comes with a professionally splice and stitched eye at one end
Double-braid is typically the strongest construction of rope and has a braided inner core and a braided outer jacket. This rope construction is torque-free and will not hockle or kink, and can be easily spliced. Our premium double braid dock lines are also resistant to rot, mildew, marine growth, chemicals and petroleum products. These high-strength ropes are soft, flexible, and are easy to handle.

Many boat owners assume that a larger diameter rope is automatically better. However, oversizing dock lines can cause more harm than good.
Oversized rope reduces elasticity
Poor shock absorption increases hardware stress
Makes tying off difficult
Increases risk of cleat damage or failure
Instead of choosing the biggest rope possible, you should size dock lines according to:
The size of your boat
The size of your cleats
A simple guideline: Use 1/8 inch of rope diameter for every 2 inches of cleat length
Always measure your boat’s cleats before purchasing dock lines.
| Cleat Length | Recommended Rope Diameter |
|---|---|
| 6-inch cleat | 3/8-inch dock line |
| 8-inch cleat | 1/2-inch dock line |
| 10-inch cleat | 5/8-inch dock line |
Here are general guidelines based on boat size: (Cleat size should confirm your final choice.)
Boats up to 24 feet → 3/8" diameter minimum
25–32 feet → 1/2" diameter
33–44 feet → 5/8" diameter
45–55 feet → 3/4" diameter
This example boat:
22 feet long
6-inch cleats
The proper dock line diameter is 3/8 inch.
A 3/8" double braid nylon dock line:
Breaking strength: 4,400 pounds
Boat weight: approximately 3,500 pounds
That means the rope is strong enough to lift the entire boat out of the water.
If a 1/2" rope were used instead:
It would not fit properly on the cleat
It would reduce elasticity
The risk of cleat failure would increase
Proper sizing improves safety and performance.
Length selection depends on your dock setup, tides, and slip configuration, but here are standard guidelines.
Use two-thirds of your boat’s length. Example: 30-foot boat → 20-foot bow and stern lines
Use lines equal to the full length of the boat. Example: 30-foot boat → 30-foot spring lines
For maximum preparedness:
2 bow lines
2 stern lines
2–4 spring lines
Having multiple lines ensures you’re ready for any docking situation, marina layout, or changing conditions.
Double braid nylon is ideal because it:
Combines strength and flexibility
Provides superior abrasion resistance
Offers controlled stretch under load
Handles well when tying and untying
Always measure your cleats first
Do not oversize rope unnecessarily
Choose nylon for elasticity
Keep multiple lines onboard
Match line length to boat length
Properly sized dock lines protect:
Your boat
Your cleats
Your dock hardware
Your investment
