SAFE USE POLICY
Rope safety is serious business! The bottom line of rope safety is you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of those around you. RightRope.com has some guidelines to help you use your rope safely but you are ultimately responsible for the safe handling and use of your ropes. By purchasing and using rope from RightRope.com, you are committing to using your rope safely and only for its intended use, within its working load limit. Furthermore, RightRope.com will not be held liable for damages resulting from the use, or misuse, of the rope you purchase.
Here are some general guidelines to help you understand the best practices of rope safety, care and use:
-
Choose the right rope. Understand the type of rope and diameter of rope that will meet the requirements of your particular application. When in doubt, ask a professional.
-
Understand tensile strength and working load limit (WLL) or safe working load (SWL). The tensile strength of a rope is the amount of force required to break the rope. WLL or SWL is the maximum amount of force you can safely apply to the rope to prevent failure. Working load limits are based on a safety factor from about 15:1 to 4:1. Different applications require different safety factors. Generally, the greater the risk of injury or damage to property, the greater the safety factor to be applied. For example, when pulling wire through conduit (fairly low risk), most manufacturers require a safety factor as low as 4:1. In this case, you would divide the tensile strength of the rope by 4 to determine the safe WLL for that application. For applications with greater risk, such as a life line (highest risk) you need to divide the tensile strength by 15 to determine the safe working load. Every situation is different and requires the judgment of a competent professional to evaluate variables and conditions that may affect the safe use of rope. Never exceed the WLL of a rope.
-
All tensile strengths and working load limits are for new ropes with no defects and perfect conditions for use. A used rope should not be used if you don’t know its history. A rope that has been subjected to shock loading, high temperatures, or extreme stress may no longer be safe to use. Have your rope inspected before use by a competent professional to determine if it is safe for use.
-
Never stand in the recoil path of a rope under tension. If rope failure occurs, it may recoil with tremendous force causing injury or death, or damage to property. Never stand under a load being lifted or in the path of a moving rope.
-
Use manufacturer recommended splicing techniques rather than knotting when possible. Knotting a rope can reduce its strength by as much as 60%.
-
Avoid abrasion, shock loading, heat, dirt, acids, alkalis, chemicals, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and moisture. Some ropes are made to be impervious to some of these elements. Check with the manufacturer before using your rope if it will be exposed to these variables. Store your ropes in a clean, dry area, away from direct sunlight and heat. Use proper care, use and storage techniques to prolong the life of your rope and to avoid premature failure.

We sell a lot of custom cut length ropes. Once a rope is custom-cut or has a custom end treatment, the sale is final and there are no returns. Please see "Custom Lengths" and "Custom End Treatments" below for further details.
ROPE LENGTH
We sell most ropes on our website in custom lengths and in bulk lengths. When you purchase rope in "bulk lengths", your rope will be measured while under slight tension, (approximately 10 pounds of tension force) and the length will be accurate to +/- 1%. We always measure and ship at least the footage ordered. We never intentionally short our customers. We use accurate, certified rope meters to measure our ropes. If you need a rope that is perfectly cut to an exact length, give us a call or leave a note on your order.
Almost all ropes have some mechanical stretch while under tension. This is especially true of 3-strand and 8-strand rope constructions. There may be slight differences in the length of a rope while under tension (when we measure and cut it), and when you receive it (no longer under tension). This is normal and should be taken into consideration when purchasing your rope.
Nylon ropes and natural fiber ropes can shrink when exposed to moisture and high humidity. We store our ropes in a climate controlled warehouse where the humidity is low. It is possible that your rope could shrink in length from being exposed to moisture or higher humidity while in transit, or when you receive it at the destination. This also should be taken into consideration when ordering.
If you are buying rope in bulk quantities (full spool or coil put-ups), we ship them as we receive them from the manufacturers. Most manufacturers put at least the advertised amount on a spool or coil, sometimes more, occasionally slightly less. These stated lengths are approximate and should be considered reasonably accurate, but not precisely guaranteed.
Custom Lengths
Our goal is to make your rope buying experience as easy as possible. One way we do that is by offering you the ability to order exact custom lengths so that you don’t have to cut it yourself. When we cut an exact custom length, we are extremely diligent to get it right. For example, if you order 34.83 feet, we cut it to exactly 34.83 feet.
For most custom lengths of rope, our process goes like this. We lay the rope on the floor in a straight line and pull it tight to be sure it is straight. We let the rope relax, then measure with a tape measure and mark the exact length, in the rope’s relaxed state. We have a second person verify the measurement and then tape and cut the rope. After cutting, it gets coiled up, packaged and then shipped.
When you receive your rope, you will need to remove the rope from the coil, starting in the center and untwisting as it comes out of the coil to remove the extra twist. If you find that your rope seems short, it is because all of the excess twist introduced by the coiling process is not removed yet, and/or the mechanical stretch is not removed yet. Simply pull the rope tight and untwist until it reaches the desired length. It must be on a flat surface in a perfectly straight line. It must be pulled tightly (this may require two people) to remove the mechanical stretch, then allowed to relax. It must have all the additional twist removed. Following this process is required for your rope to be the correct length. We will gladly accept responsibility if we cut your rope to the incorrect length, however, if this process is not followed and we measure the rope when it gets back to us and it is the correct length, we will not be able to refund.
Custom lengths are generally not able to be returned or refunded. We may, at our discretion, accept a return and refund a portion of your purchase price, down to the next sellable “bulk length”. For example, if you order 34.83 feet, we may at our discretion allow the return and refund the price of a 25 foot bulk length if such a length is available for the product you ordered.
Custom End Treatments
We are pleased to be able to offer custom splicing and custom rope end treatments for nearly all of our products. If you order custom end treatments, we are extremely diligent to get it right. Eye splice sizing, finished rope length, eye to eye length, hardware, etc. Please make sure you fully understand what you are ordering and how it will work for your intended application before placing your order. Feel free to call or email before purchasing and we will be happy to discuss and help you with your project. Ropes ordered with custom ends are generally not able to be returned or refunded. We may, at our discretion, accept a return and refund a portion of your purchase price, down to the next sellable “bulk length”. For example, if you order 34.83 feet, with an eye splice, we may at our discretion allow the return and refund the price of a 25 foot bulk length (without the eye splice) if such a length is available for the product you ordered.
PRODUCT VARIABILITY
We intentionally choose manufacturers that produce the highest quality products available because this allows us to offer you better consistency in what you are purchasing. However, with all manufactured products it is possible there could be slight variations in the color and/or size of the rope from lot to lot and from diameter to diameter. For example, if you ordered some 1” yellow polypropylene rope today, and next year you order the same product it is possible there could be a slight difference in color. Also, if you order 1 ¼” yellow polypropylene and 1” yellow polypropylene, it is possible there could be a slight variation in color because they come from different lots. Similarly, when ordering a natural fiber rope, smell and texture can vary with ropes from different lots. Ropes exposed to sunlight can fade over time. Consider this when adding onto an existing project.
Another consideration about product variability is that diameters can vary by rope type, material and manufacturer. Lower cost ropes (such as polypropylene) are typically slightly undersized. This is standard in the industry and meets the specifications of the Cordage Institute. Conversely, natural fiber ropes tend to be slightly oversized. If you need help understanding the exact diameter of the rope you wish to purchase, contact us and we can make sure you get what you need.
