All Manila rope fibers are treated with a light mineral oil during manufacturing to prevent them from becoming brittle. Some people don’t like the smell of Manila rope, especially when it is brand new, but the odor will fade over time. We find the smell of our Manila rope to be pleasant.
Manila rope is suitable for indoor or outdoor use, although it does mildew and rot over time with exposure to moisture unless properly dried. Manila rope can also leave splinters in your hands especially when you first start using it.
Since Manila rope is made from a natural plant fiber it does shrink around 15% in length and expands in diameter when it gets wet. Please take this into consideration when ordering and be sure to allow for this when installing your rope. Also, these natural plant fiber ropes tend to run a little larger in diameter than you might expect. Our 3 strand twisted Manila rope is grade 1 and meets or exceeds the Cordage Institute Specifications for Manila rope.

Manila rope is sometimes referred to as hemp rope but it is not actual hemp (cannabis). It is made in the Philippines from the fibers of the abacá plant which is a close relative of the common banana plant. The fibers are stripped from the leaves of the abacá plant and twisted into yarns. Manila is the strongest and most popular natural-fiber rope and has the best grip in your hands — even when wet. Natural Manila rope is a very low stretch rope and holds knots really well.
If you need large quantities, click ‘Bulk Manila Rope’ for discounted, wholesale pricing.
If you live in a humid or wet climate, or you don’t like some of these characteristics, you might consider our Promanila rope. This synthetic Manila has a longer service-life and does not mildew or rot.

You can order Manila rope by the foot in any length you want. Consider three ways you can place your order to save money or the need for freight carrier shipping.
Incremental Pricing
There are price breaks you can take advantage of by buying in the increments outlined above. For example, buying a 100’ piece is a much better price per foot than buying 98’ by the foot. Consider rounding up to the next incremental pricing bracket to save yourself some money.
Combining Incremental Pricing and ‘By the Foot’
You can also save money by buying an even increment plus a few feet by the foot.
Example 1: If you need 117’ in one continuous piece you can add two items to your cart, a 100’ increment and quantity ‘17’ by the foot. We can send you the 117’ piece in one continuous length. Just leave us a note during checkout about how you want your rope cut.
Example 2: If you need two pieces 60’ each, the best way to buy it would be to add two items to your cart, a 100’ increment and quantity ‘20’ by the foot. Just leave a note letting us know you want two 60’ pieces.
If you need one continuous piece that weighs over 150 pounds, it will have to ship via freight carrier. The following sizes weigh over 150 pounds and freight will need to be quoted on an individual basis: 1.25″ x 350′ or more, 1.5″ x 250′ or more, 2″ x 150′ or more, 3″ x 60′ or more. If you don’t have a business address or the equipment to unload a freight shipment, you can avoid shipping by freight carrier if your rope can be cut into smaller pieces. For example, if you need 200’ of 2” Manila rope and you don’t have a business address with a forklift, you can have us cut your rope into two, 100’ pieces. This will allow for regular ground shipping and make it easier to handle and install. Please contact us with your address for a freight quote if needed.
