What does hockling mean?

Hockling is a permanent, spiral deformation that occurs in 3-strand rope when it is twisted against the direction of its lay. This causes the rope to kink, loop, and lose its round shape, resulting in reduced strength and making the rope difficult or impossible to use safely.
